Pandora
I first found out about Pandora through a Current TV pod last year. They explained how the company actually hires young recent college grads with degrees in music and have them scientifically analyze each song according to a number of song elements such as syncopation, production values, rhythm patterns, key tonalities, etc. The more you listened and rated the music you like and don’t like, the better songs Pandora plays for you.
Ok and here’s my problem right now. It worked beautifully when I first started using it, but lately my Pandora is making some HIGHLY questionanle suggestions that make me want to stab my ear with a sharp pencil. I got Jessica Simpson for crying out loud!
Anyways I still love love Pandora and prefer it over its main competitor Last.fm. I find Pandora’s interface simple and elegant, easier to navigate and more straight to the point. Only good think I can say about Last.fm is that they don’t seem to limit the number of songs you can play per hour. Pandora limits users to about 6 songs per hour due to music licensing issues. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Last.fm is based out of the UK. I went to one of Tim Westergren’s meetups (Pandora’s founder) in Miami and he was actually a really cool down-to-earth guy who’s ever excited about music and of course is a musician himself.
So um yea Pandora, you’re great and all but keep the pop vomit out of my stations!
