Michael C. Moyniha of Reason.tv recently sat down with Gorki Águila, singer of Cuban punk rock band Porno Para Ricardo, for a fascinating interview on his experience as a musician in Cuba.
The communist regime in Cuba holds a special place of contempt for artists. Unless you’re Silvio Rodríguez and sing praises of the government, you will be persecuted, oppressed, and harassed if your art is critical of the so-called Revolution. Águila explains in the video how you can even get arrested for “pre-criminal behavior” which means you can get arrested for anything the regime deems “socially dangerous.”
This interview is especially interesting considering Yoani Sánchez, famous Cuban blogger and outspoken Castro critic, was recently prohibited from traveling to NYC to pick up a journalism award.
