I wish I Wasn’t There…
I just came back from watching “I’m Not There” and I am so seriously dissapointed. Todd Haynes had such a great opportunity to make an excellent film with one of the best stories (correction, the best) in American music history. The movie was basically a self indulgent piece of crap filled with nonsensical abstract pieces here and there leading to nowhere. He focused way too much on the mystic surrounding Dylan and not enough on his actual life, the facts. Nobody tells Dylan’s story better than Dylan himself. His memoir is simply excellent and I always thought it would have made a marvelous screenplay.
So far the movies I was most excited about this year, Across The Universe and I’m Not There, were destroyed by filmmakers attempting to make their work into some sort of plastic ultra-artsy-underground affair.
